Blog week ending 7th May
As we reach this pivotal moment in the school year, I want to take a moment to wish our incredible Year 11 students (and Year 13) the very best of luck and every success in their upcoming exams. Having taught so many of you throughout your time at WGSB and having watched you grow intellectually, grow personally, and yes, grow taller too! it has been an utter pleasure to be a small part of your educational journey so far.
You are well prepared. You are well supported. You are ready.
Every lesson, every challenge, every experiment (successful or otherwise!) has brought you to this point. You’ve shown resilience, curiosity, humour, and determination, qualities that will carry you far beyond the exam hall and into the many exciting adventures life has waiting for you.
Remember: you’ve got this. And if at any point you feel you need a little extra support, you’ve got that too. We are behind you every step of the way.
Have a magnificent summer rest, recharge, celebrate your achievements and we look forward to welcoming you back in September as part of our WG6 community. Miss Kemp Head of Year 11
The below photos capture the Year 11 breakfast which featured electrifying performances from two Year 11 bands as well as heartfelt speeches from staff and a photo montage spanning their time from Year 7.. and the obligatory shirt signing!
Our Year 13 students’ leavers event is taking place today (Thursday 7th May) and will be reported in our next School Blog.

Student Managers Update. At last term’s Prefect meeting, agenda items included extra-curricular provision and use of the school field at lunchtimes. Students suggested a rota for field use, so this term, now the school field is open, a rota has been implemented. Students also asked for clearer advertising of extra-curricular clubs, so we now have now created a poster timetable which is prominently displayed in the main hall and is also available to view on our website by following this link The timetable will be updated each Term to include new Clubs.

75th Anniversary Programme of Celebration. Across the school, we have been marking our 75th Anniversary with a range of dedicated form‑time activities. Students and staff have worked together to develop a series of special events to celebrate this significant milestone in WGSB’s history. As we continue through our year of celebrations, we will be highlighting key elements from our 75th Programme of Celebration.
This Week’s Blog Highlight – The WGSB Time Capsule
One of our most exciting anniversary projects is the creation of the WGSB Time Capsule. Students and staff will collaborate to capture the essence of what it means to be a WGSB student in the academic year 2025–26.
The time capsule will include a curated collection of items, reflections, and creative contributions that represent school life today. Once complete, it will be buried on the school site and sealed for the future. The capsule is scheduled to be re‑opened in 25 years, during the school’s 100th Anniversary celebrations offering future students and staff a unique window into our present.
Library Event. Special Screening: The Librarians – Multiple Award‑Winning Documentary. Students in KS4 and KS5 were invited to a special screening of the newly released and critically acclaimed documentary The Librarians. This powerful, edge‑of‑your‑seat film follows librarians on the front lines as they confront censorship and work to defend every young person’s right to read. It was a great watch which we all thoroughly enjoyed – with students inspired by its message and power around protecting voices, stories, and access for all.
Our next Library Event is tomorrow, in celebration of David Attenbnorough’s 100 birthday! (poster below!) .. and not forgetting Miss Netherwood has a Bookmark competition live at the moment – also, poster below! Pop into the library to take part.

Our Art Department hosted a recent House Competition. Students were given cutout cardboard letters that spell the name of their house and with these they had to make a freestanding sculpture construction that balanced and remained upright without the use of tape or glue. Staff judged the entries on their aesthetic quality and skill.
Congratulations to all finalists, special congratulations (and the big House Point haul!) go to ….

Congratulations to Hayden who competed in the Mini London Marathon on Saturday 25th April. He participated the U16 boys event representing Bexley and finished at place 35 out of 153 athletes, finishing time 8:26. Incredibly strong performance .. and one that particularly resonated with Mr Lynch, Head of PE .. as he also took part (some ‘few’ years ago!)

Jonty H and Oliver P’s team Westcombe Park drew in the Kent 7’s Rugby against Beccehamians RFC played at Medway – they played seven matches – winning every one, then drew in the final and the Kent Youth 7s Cup is shared. An exceptional achievement for them and their team!

Oliver R of 7B, George B of 9T and Harrison C of 11K entered the Kent Schools Golf Championship held at Princes Golf club in Sandwich. Each school can enter three students, and the best two scores go forward as a team entry. We finished in 7th place from 16 schools that entered.
All three students performed well in extremely challenging conditions. At times, the wind gusts were over 40mph, so it was a very extreme challenge. None more so than for Oliver R, who was competing for the very first time and one of the youngest players in the field of 65.
Harrison is now playing with a handicap of 1.0 which was one of the lowest in the entire field. Despite a difficult start he managed to finish in 9th place overall and has qualified for the Southern England Championships – a great achievement! Well done to all three students!
